Archives of participants in the Great Patriotic War

The creation of special information portals providing information from the archives of military events of 1941-1945 became possible after the declassification of documents of that time. At the same time, there are both state archives and those created by citizens.

The analysis made it possible to identify the following large databases of WWII participants on the Internet:

  • portal “Memory of the People”;
  • website of the Immortal Regiment movement.

There are other large archives that contain information about both soldiers of the 20th century wars. (“Forgotten Regiment”), and about the burial places of WWII participants (“Remember us”).

When searching for information about burial places or obtaining additional information, it is advisable to use archives in certain areas. You can find out how to find the burial place of a soldier who died during the war from the corresponding article on our website.

Where and how to find a WWII participant and veteran by name

All of the above services allow users to independently search by the last name of WWII participants. To do this, it is enough to indicate your last name and other known information, including first name, patronymic and date of birth, on the main page of the archive in the search bar.

Some resources provide an advanced search that allows you to search by date of death, place of service, awards and other information that allows you to identify a person.

Don't know your rights?

In addition, the mentioned databases have their own characteristics:

  1. If there is information that a WWII participant died during hostilities or died from an illness, it is recommended to search in the Memorial database.
  2. If you need to find information about awards in relation to a specific participant in hostilities in the period 1941-1945, it is better to use the capabilities of the Feat of the People resource. The system allows you to find award documents that were previously classified.
  3. If there is no information about the award, it is recommended to use a search in the “Memory of the People” document database. This unique service allows you to find information about a WWII participant and determine his fate, receiving information about participation in specific military operations and awards in chronological order from the moment of conscription.

How to find a soldier by last name on the Immortal Regiment website

Unlike the resources discussed above, the “Immortal Regiment” project is based on information posted by descendants of WWII participants who tell stories about their relatives. The system allows you not only to search among existing information, but also to supplement the database with new information.

To search by last name, in the upper right corner you need to click on the magnifying glass icon and in the line that appears, indicate the full name of the WWII participant. As a result, all options that satisfy the search criteria in whole or in part will be displayed.

In conclusion, we note that it is not always enough to search for WWII veterans by last name - finding information only by this criterion in relation to a specific person is usually problematic due to the large number of namesakes. To get results, it is recommended to use the advanced search, specifying and additional information- for example, name, date of birth or military rank.

To search for information, you need to fill out a given template.
The case of the letters does not matter.
In each field, you can use the asterisk symbol, which indicates that any characters can follow from this place in the search text. For example, when specifying an expression in the Surname field, a search will be made for all surnames beginning with - Ivanov, Ivanovsky, etc., when specifying - all surnames containing the substring - not only Ivanov, but also Selivanovsky, etc.
We recommend that you always use the asterisk symbol at the end of the search text, this will increase the chance of finding entries with spelling variations.

In some lists, the names of the dead are written in Latin letters.
Some lists indicate double full names (in parentheses or with a hyphen). To search such entries, use the asterisk symbol at the beginning and end of the search text.

The search result is displayed in a list of 20 people per page, the number of records found will be indicated above the list, and the number of pages of the list will be indicated below the list. You can go to the desired page by typing its number in the appropriate window. The list shows only part of the information about a person; to view all available information about him, you need to click on the -> icon.
To navigate in the window for viewing information about an individual, you can use the arrow keys, PageUp and PageDown (move to the page up and down, respectively), or the Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End key combinations (move to the beginning and end of the document, respectively). To return to the list of found names, click on the “Return to search results” button at the bottom of the window.

Also search in the Generalized Data Bank of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (OBD "Memorial") www.obd-memorial.ru

Databases were moved in 2017 to the new site. Added the ability to search by different directory fields. Speeded up and added new search capabilities in the consolidated database.
.

OBD "Memorial" is a generalized electronic information bank that contains information about Soviet soldiers killed, deceased and missing during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period. OBD "Memorial" was created by the Ministry of Defense Russian Federation, technical part implemented by the Electronic Archive Corporation.

Today, the data archive contains about 37 million records from documents (of which 16.6 million digital copies of documents on irretrievable losses during the Great Patriotic War from 47.8 thousand archival files of TsAMO RF, TSVMA, RGVA, GA RF, regional archives of the Russian Archives, regional military registration and enlistment offices and 45.3 thousand passports of military graves) and more than 11 million entries from the Book of Memory.

The main goal of the project is to enable millions of citizens to determine the fate or find information about their dead or missing relatives and friends, and determine the place of their burial. During the creation of the Memorial ODB, funds 58 and 33 (“Reports of combat units on irretrievable losses” and a card file for recording Soviet prisoners of war), stored in the Central Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia, were processed, as well as documents from the “Grave Passports” fund, stored in the VIC of the Russian Armed Forces.

The main array of processed documents consists of:

  • reports from combat units about irretrievable losses,
  • other archival documents, specifying losses (funerals, documents of hospitals and medical sanitary battalions (medical battalions), captured cards of Soviet prisoners of war, etc.),
  • passports of burials of Soviet soldiers and commanders (officers).

Each entry in the Memorial ODB contains the last name, first name, patronymic, date of birth, date of retirement and place of birth of the serviceman. Moreover, the resource contains scanned copies of all source documents containing information about persons. They often contain additional information, including the names and addresses of relatives to whom the funeral was sent.

From January 28, 2010, access to some information about personalities was limited due to the entry into force Federal Laws dated June 27, 2006 No. 152-FZ “On Personal Data” (as amended, Article 9 and Article 19), as well as dated October 22, 2004 No. 125-FZ “On archival affairs in the Russian Federation" (as amended by Article 25). As reported on the OBD website, information that can serve as a reason to belittle the personal dignity, honor and reputation of soldiers (about people who went over to the side of the German troops, about those convicted by a military tribunal, etc.). was replaced by general wording (“sent to the front line” and another reason for departure or death), and access to viewing electronic copies of documents was also limited, on which, in addition to the specifically wanted soldier, you can see information on other people with the above reasons for departure.
